Montgomery County fire departments and the Winona Montgomery Consolidated School District joined to honor a fallen Magee firefighter prior to Friday night’s football game between Winona High School and Magee High School.
Winona-Montgomery Consolidated School District Superintendent Dr. Teresa Jackson said, “Winona-Montgomery Consolidated School District was honored to partner with the Winona, Kilmichael, and Duck Hill Fire Departments to honor all law enforcement and first responders and pay tribute to Magee’s fallen firefighter, Mr. Dustin Grubbs.”
In a moving ceremony pre-game, firefighters representing three of Montgomery County’s fire departments saluted the visiting side in memory of Grubbs, who was killed in an automobile accident while responding to a fire on November 3. Jackson addressed the crowd over the loud speaker.
“We salute the bravery of all those first responders and emergency services personnel,” Jackson said. “Your outstanding service makes our community safer and our citizens more secure.”
Jackson also addressed those visiting Winona from Magee.
“Condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Grubbs and the entire Magee community,” Jackson said.
According to the Magee Courier, on November 3 around 9 p.m., Fireman Dustin Grubbs, 34, with the Magee Fire Department was responding to a call for a structure fire when the vehicle he was driving left the road and overturned on Raleigh Road at Everett Hill in Simpson County.
Grubbs had served for two years as a volunteer fireman. He was survived by his wife, Joni, and four children, Asha, 15, Gretta, 12, Jemma, 9 and Graham, 2.
