First Baptist Church of Winona is presenting an encore performance of “Bow the Knee,” a musical drama by Chris Machen and directed by Gary Anglin, First Baptist’s music minister, Friday, April 19, 2019, at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
“This is a really great musical that causes people to contemplate in their own relationship [with Jesus] and who Jesus really is,” Anglin said.
“Bow the Knee” encompasses the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, as seen through the eyes of a Roman centurion, Anthony, played by Steve Lester. Daniel Hill portrays Jesus.
The drama is based on the transformation of the centurion who witnesses the crucifixion of Jesus as stated in Mark 15:39, “And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son of God!"
“Jesus [Hill] and the Centurion [Lester] sing a dynamic vocal duet – possibly one of the biggest vocal numbers I’ve every directed,” Anglin said of the song “So All Along.” “It is a real showstopper. Both Jesus and Anthony are crying out to God. It is really powerful.”
Also in featured roles are Mike Jones as Eli and Michael Pegg as Benjamin, both servants of Anthony. Charlie Parkerson plays another Roman solider, and Hattie Frank Maloney will portray a fallen woman in the Easter drama.
Anglin said there is about 50 men, women, and children in the ensemble cast, approximately 35 of those singing in the choir. Practice for the musical drama has been ongoing since January.
The event is free to the public, and Anglin invites the community to attend.
