The Carrollton Board of Alderman attempted to make strides towards a safer Town of Carrollton at the last board meeting.
Mayor Pam Lee said that drivers continue to go in both directions on old two-way streets that have now become one-way streets. About two years ago, a few streets that were so narrow as to be causing accidents were changed from two-way streets to one-ways. Getting residents who had become accustomed to driving in either direction on the streets has presented some challenges, Lee said.
The board recently had Doyle to install “Do Not Enter” signs on the town’s Hafner Street in an attempt to give drivers more reminders that they should only enter and exit the streets from one direction.
“The street is just too narrow,” Lee said. “This is for everyone’s safety.” Lee cited several accidents and “near misses” as reasons behind the initial change.
There are several surrounding streets that could be used instead. From Lexington at the bridge down to the football field continues to be two way, Lee said. She also pointed out that some drivers had been using private properties as streets. For example, the roads are two-way down to the well yard, but just past that, to the right, is a private driveway.
Also discussed at the meeting was an update on the Water Rate Increase. The board is currently in the process of submitting documentation to the Public Service Commission. The board is looking to determine deposit refunds for the last three years. A letter has already been sent to the town’s water customers informing them off what is going on, the mayor said.
The board also set the date for a working meeting to amend the old budget and start working on next year’s budget. The meeting is tentatively set for July 19 at 7p.m. at Town Hall.
