The Winona girls soccer took a 3-2 win over Philadelphia and tied Greenville 1-1 in a game that was a close to possible as a victory.
A second half goal by Melissa Tacillo, with an assist from Krystal Hughes, gave the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead against Greenville that held up until the very end. “They tied it up on the last play of the game,” said Winona coach James Colbert. “That was one of our better games. We are getting better.”
Against Philadelphia, unassisted goals by Kristen Robertson and Hughes gave the Lady Tigers a 2-0 halftime lead. Robertson scored again in the second half when she booted in a loose ball in front of the Philadelphia goal. Colbert said his team played better in the second half despite being outscored 2-1.
In an earlier game, Winona was beaten by Choctaw Central 4-1.Rachel Van Horn scored for the Lady Tigers, with an assist from Robertson. Christy Lewis and Jaiden Thomas each scored twice for Choctaw Central.
Colbert said that game showed how much the Lady Tigers improved during the season, A month earlier, they lost to Choctaw Central 9-0.
The Winona boys soccer team dropped a couple of one-goal games, losing to Greenville 2-1 and Philadelphia 1-0.
Greenville took a 2-0 lead on goals in the first and second half before Sam Matrisciano scored for the Tigers, with an assist from Dalton Murphy.
“We passed the ball a lot better,” said Winona coach Mark Austin. “They (Greenville) were a lot faster, but we passed it well. That's how we scored. We're improving every game. That's all you can ask.”
Philadelphia scored a late goal to defeat Winona. “We had our chances to win,”Austin said. “We had two PKs (penalty kicks) and missed both. We had a lot more shots on goal.”
Earlier, Winona was beaten by Choctaw Central 3-0, The Tigers and Lady Tigers completed their seasons Tuesday with a makeup date against Mississippi School for Math and Science.
