The J.Z. George Jaguars picked up a 61-53 victory over Starkville Academy last week during the East Webster Christmas Classic.
It was one of three games the Jaguars played. They dropped a 76-48 loss to East Webster and a 64-31 decision to Baldwyn.
Malik Branch scored 24 points and Ceasa Glenn added 11 in J.Z. George’s win over Starkville Academy.
The Jaguars led 17-9 after the first quarter. The second quarter was closer with J.Z. George outscoring the Volunteers 17-16. At the break, J.Z. George held a 34-25 lead. The second half would be closer but J.Z. George held on for the win.
East Webster proved to be too much for the Jaguars in their game. East Webster led 25-12 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams scored 17 points in the second quarter and East Webster led 42-29 at the half. East Webster would outscore J.Z. George 34-19 in the second half and held on to improve its record to 12-1, according to Max Preps.
Devonta Smith led the Jaguars with 13 points and Branch scored 10.
There were no statistics available from the Baldwyn game. The Jaguars entered the week with a 6-9 record.
The Jaguars have been practicing over the holidays, trying to improve on their game plan.
“We hope the extra work will improve our chances,” coach Jonathan Childs said. “We have been working to correct our mistakes. We have our region schedule coming up.”

The J.Z. George girls went 0-3 in the East Webster tournament. They lost 60-31 to Oak Hill Academy and 55-29 to Hebron.

J.Z. George was set to visit Ridgeland on Tuesday, the host region opponent Amanda Elzy on Friday.
