Having a working smoke detector is a necessity, but for some that necessity is often put off for financial reasons. However, a local group in Winona are helping people to have new smoke detectors installed in their homes.
The Lodi-Minerva Road Volunteer Fire Department Board is working toward a grant to help with the building of a new volunteer fire department. The group, led by concerned citizens, wants to create a fire station in the Lodi-Minerva area of eastern Montgomery County because there isn’t one in the area or nearby.
The Kilmichael Volunteer Fire Department and Poplar Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to a tractor shed fire Wednesday afternoon.
The festival – and show – in Vaiden must roll on, and although it hit a slight snag, the Vaiden Heritage Festival is still ongoing.
Originally scheduled for Oct. 20, the festival was pushed back because of heavy rain. Mayor Mel Hawthorne said he got excited when he noticed the rain had come, but his excitement didn’t last too long.
The scarecrows are out, and the judges are in for the town-wide scarecrow competition, sponsored by Winona Main Street and Modern Woodmen of America. Winona Career and Technical Center took home first place in the business/organization category, and George and Margaret Harris won the residential category.
Ruby Stansbury, 58, of McCarley, doesn’t like saying her cancer is in remission but it’s in healing. Stansbury said her sister’s pastor in Kalamazoo, Mo., sent scriptures for her to meditate on daily and word to her that she was going to live and not die because God said so. And almost a year strong, she’s still fighting.
While other towns are being “spooked” and giving out candy galore to awaiting trick-or-treaters, Duck Hill is taking a different and a more active approach.
On Oct. 30, there will be a “Spooking out Drugs” Drug Awareness program along with a joint trunk-or-treat. The event will take place at the old gym on Main Street.
Carroll County is close to receiving their first allotment from the state from Senate Bill 2002. The board passed a memorandum of understanding that authorizes the spending of the $500,000 that was allotted during the legislative special session.
It’s time for all the scary ghosts, ghouls and goblins to come out and play. Area communities are preparing for Halloween night, and with many events happening, there’s sure to be enough candy to go around.
