Winona cornerback Davandre Bays was chosen as Most Valuable Player of the Bernard Blackwell North/South All Star Game as a member of the South team. Played in the rain on a muddy field at Gulfport Dec. 8, the game ended in a scoreless tie for only the second time in the 70-year history of the game.
Forest won Region 5-3A last year, but there is a new kid on the block. Winona went on the road for its first region game as a 3A school and improved to 4-0 with a dominating win over the Bearcats 41-21.
“That was nice,” said coach Joey Tompkins. “1-0 is better than 0-1.”
The Tigers have scored at least 33 points in every game.
July can be leisure time for high school basketball players between summer ball in June and the start of school in August.
“In July, we just have open gym,” said Winona boys coach Presley Coleman. “It’s kind of our down time. It gives the players a chance to rest and be ready for workouts in August once we get back in school.”
