A couple of strong pitching performances by Jon Reuben Chesteen resulted in Winona victories over Forest 7-4 and Morton 4-3. In between the two wins, the Tigers were defeated by Choctaw Central 11-4.
"Jon Reuben is throwing it well. He's giving us a chance to win," said Winona Head Baseball Coach Mark Austin.
Winona dropped two baseball games at a three team round-robin tournament hosted by the Tigers last Saturday. Winona was defeated by Water Valley 10-6 and Winston Academy 9-3.
Coach Mark Austin said the Tigers need to improve in all aspects. “We're not fundamentally sound.”
Winona softball was 2-4 in the past week – two victories and four rain outs.
The Lady Tigers defeated J.Z. George 18-0 and French Camp 12-2. Scheduled games with Kosciusko, Florence, Riverside and Shannon were postponed due to the weather.
Winona could have been considered an ungracious host when the Tigers hosted a baseball tournament last Friday and Saturday. Winona totaled 48 runs in wins over Choctaw County 15-7, J.Z. George 18-1 and Kirk Academy 15-5.
Winona senior Jon Reuben Chesteen has signed an academic scholarship with Mississippi Delta Community College, where he will play baseball.
“I felt like it's the best place for me where I’ll have an opportunity to play the most innings,” Chesteen said. “I like the coach (Dan Rives) and I like the college.”
