The Winona boys 400 relay team of An’darius Coffey, Malcolm Gholston, Adavion Hargrove and Ahmad Robinson finished first at the Southaven Relays Monday with a time of 44.08. That was almost a full second better than runner-up Senatobia.
The Winona softball team opened the season with a 4-0 win over Leake Central and a 10-0 loss to defending 4A state champion Kosciusko in Jamboree games.
The scheduled regular season opening games with Charleston and French Camp last Friday were rained out and rescheduled as doubleheaders.
Last season was a very good year for Winona track.
The boys and girls teams both finished third in the MHSAA 2A state meet. Both teams won district, region and North State meets leading up to the state meet.
But that was then and this is now. Winona has moved up to 3A.
The Winona tennis team has a new region, 3-3A, and some new faces with the graduation of seven seniors from last year’s team. The region includes St. Andrew’s, Morton, Raleigh, Forest and McLaurin.
The Winona boys basketball team won only six games this season with a young team, but that was definitely an improvement over a year ago.
“We went from winless to six wins this season,” said Coach Presley Coleman. “We were a lot more competitive this year. We had some close games that could have gone either way.
The season ended for the Winona boys and girls basketball teams with losses in the opening round of the Region 5-3A basketball tournament played at Southeast Lauderdale. The boys lost to Forest 72-55 and the girls were edged by Kemper County 37-34.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers will play in the Region 5-3A tournament at Southeast Lauderdale beginning Monday.
The Winona boys basketball team rode a big first quarter and a strong game by Davandre Bays to its first region victory in nearly two years, 61-48 over Morton.
“We had a great start. Probably the best start we had all year,” said Coach Presley Coleman.
The Winona girls basketball team used a strong second half to defeat Ethel 41-32.
“We came out flat in the first half, completely flat,” said Coach Frank Miller.
A goal by Garrett Ables gave the Winona boys soccer team a 1-0 victory over Mississippi School for Math and Science. It was the Tigers second win of the season against MSMS in Region 4 games for 3A/2A/1A schools. The Lady Tigers were defeated 8-1. Krystle Hughes scored the team’s goal.
