KILMICHAEL -- The Montgomery County boys are atop the MHSAA Region 5-1A standings following a big win over McAdams Monday.
Decoreyon Small led four Hornets in double figures with 23 points in a 62-44 victory. Katicion Winfrey had 14 points, Deterrious Williams 13 and Aramus Sutton 10.
County rivals Winona and Montgomery County met at the Hornets' gym Saturday, and the boys and girls both went right down to the wire.
Montgomery County won the boys game 53-49 and Winona the girls game 37-35 on a buzzer beater.
After being idle for nearly a month, The Montgomery County boys and girls basketball teams played were set to play first games of 2018 against MHSAA 2-2A foe McAdams Tuesday and have home games scheduled for Thursday and Friday against Nanih Waiya and Coffeeville.
The Winona boys soccer team dropped a 3-0 match to Strayhorn and had two contests called off due to winter weather.
“Defensively, we're playing better, but we were not able to contrlo the ball to get shots on goal,” said coach Mark Austin. He said defender Garrett Ables had a strong game.
After winning only seven games in Jeremy Robinson's first two years as Montgomery County High School girls basketball coach, the Lady Hornets are 12-4 this season, including the championship of the Winona tournament.
With more than a week to prepare for it's next game, Winona boys basketball coach Presley Coleman is hopeful the Tigers will finally be able to secure a first win of the season. Following the Christmas break, Winona will begin MHSAA Region 2-2A play Tuesday with a home game against Leflore County.
Montgomery County senior Decoreyon Small has a routine when he steps to the free throw line.
