WINONA - Police are looking for the person or persons responsible for shooting a family pet in a Winona neighborhood two weeks ago.
According to Rebecca Herring, between 10 p.m. and midnight on the evening of March 3, 2010, her Labrador mix, Annie, was shot with a pellet in the abdomen and died a week later from injuries sustained from the shooting.
The incident occurred at the Herring residence on Jones Street.
Herring said after letting Annie inside the house for the night, the dog insisted on going out once more before bed. After a few minutes, Herring went to let Annie inside, but the dog refused to come out of her dog house.
The next morning, Herring and her husband, Frank, found blood drops on the driveway, inside the carport, and inside the dog house. Annie had one gunshot wound to her stomach and was rushed to the veterinarian's office for attention, but she died a week later from severe internal injuries.
Winona Chief of Police Johnny Hargrove said the incident is still under investigation, and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department is assisting on the case.
The Herrings are offering a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible, and Doll Stanley with In Defense of Animals in Duck Hill has added an additional $500 to the reward.
If you have any information about this case, please contact the Winona Police Department at 283-1140 or the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department at 283-4612.
