WINONA - The city will be installing a much needed fire hydrant on Bluff Springs Road.

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen voted to spend the $1,340 to give residents better fire protection in that area.

According to Winona water superintendent Frank Faulkner, the four inch water main in that area will support a fire plug that will provide protection to the four houses in the vicinity. It will be lodged on the west side of the street.

"That plug will help all of those people in that area," Winona Fire Chief James "Smitty" Smith said.

In other city business, Winona parks director Mike Narmour told the board that recreational soccer started this week, and local children are enjoying the improvements made on the fields. In addition, baseball and softball drafts from the upcoming recreational season will be held next Friday night for ages 8 to 14 age groups. Tee ball and buddy ball teams will be chosen at a later date.

With the success of the last two tournaments, Namour told the board that with the recreational sports season starting, tournaments will be scaled down to Saturday and Sunday so Friday night league play will not be interrupted.

"That is why we brought Mr. Narmour here," Mayor Jerry Flowers said. "He set the bar high."

Alderman Clifford Dance said the tournaments were also helping Winona businesses and restaurants.

"The restaurants out by the interstate have stayed busy with all the people coming in for the tournaments," Dance said. "[One restaurant] told me that the two weekends of the tournaments were busier than a whole month."
