WINONA - This weekend will be a busy one for Winona restaurants and merchants as baseball teams converge on the city for the Early Bird Brawl at the Winona Recreation Park.

According to Mike Narmour, Winona park director, 47 teams have signed up for this weekend's three day baseball tournament, and with the enormous response, Winona and Carroll County recreation parks will be packed.

"Winona will have 32 teams play at our park," Narmour said. "I am guessing that 1,300 to 1,400 people will be coming into town. The other 15 teams will be playing in Carrollton, so between the two, we are looking at 1,500 to 1,800 people in both cities."

Narmour said he and his staff have been busy preparing for those attending the tournament, and he asked help from the Winona Water Department to finish repairs on the pavilion bathrooms that were damaged during the winter freeze to handle the number of guests.

"This has even exceeded my own expectations," Narmour said.

In other recreation sports news, the city will kick-off the soccer season Monday for six through eight-year-olds, and Narmour said soccer fields are now ready for play.

He reported that so far, more than 200 kids have already signed up for the upcoming baseball and softball season, and today is the last day for signups. He did say he would allow late registration until teams are picked on March 12.

Players can register at Winona City Hall.
