WINONA - Police arrested and charged a Winona man with two burglaries.

Winona Police Department arrested Eric James, 40, of Winona and charged him with the burglaries of the Save Mor Food Mart on Highway 51 at Summit Street and Crossroads Jewelers on Summit Street.

According to Winona Chief of Police Johnny Hargrove, James was arrested the evening of February 12 after an informant provided information to the department.

Just a week ago, Winona Police responded to a burglary at the Save Mor Food Mart. The glass front door was smashed and cigarettes and beer were stolen.

Four days later, the owners of Crossroads Jewelers rushed to their downtown store at 4:30 a.m. after being alerted by the the alarm company of an intruder. The front door was also smashed, but no merchandise seemed to be missing.

Evidence of blood drops inside the store and along the sidewalk outside were collected and sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson for analysis. Hargrove said a DNA comparison will be made and compared to the suspected burglar.

In an unrelated case, Winona Police responded to another burglary at the Save Mor Food Mart last Saturday night.

When police arrived at the scene in the early morning hours, the front door was again smashed and burglars stole the store's cash register.

"The cash register was empty," Hargrove said.

Police are reviewing video surveillance footage taken during the robbery and hope to make an arrest soon. The investigation is on-going, but Hargrove said he did not feel the burglaries were connected.
