WINONA - Early Tuesday morning, George Harris was awakened by a call from the alarm company monitoring his jewelry store on Summit Street in downtown Winona. It was the second such call in no more than a week.
"They called us around 4:30 a.m.," Harris said. "We came down here, and the door was knocked out."
Members of the Winona Police Department met Harris at Crossroads Jewelers where they began collecting evidence and started an investigation.
Harris said when he arrived at the store Tuesday morning, he found blood just inside the store and on the sidewalk leading toward Front Street. He said he thought the burglar cut himself while trying to enter the store.
"The alarm must have scared him off," Harris said. "Nothing appears to be missing."
No more than a week ago, Harris said his front window was also knocked out. The glass was only recently replaced.
"The alarm went off then too," Harris said. "We don't think anyone got into the store then."
Winona Chief of Police Johnny Hargrove said his department is currently investigating the burglary, and evidence from the crime scene was sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson.
"We will do a DNA comparison when a suspect is identified," Hargrove said.
Hargrove visited the scene himself Tuesday morning, and as of press time, he said no arrests have been made in the case.
Friday night, Winona Police responded to another burglary at the Save Mor Food Mart on the corner of Summit Street and Highway 51.
According to Hargrove, police responded to a call at approximately 4:30 a.m. The front door was also smashed.
Hargrove said it seemed that only cigarettes and beer were stolen in the burglary.
This case is also still under investigation.
