The show choir from Winona Elementary School along with choir members from Winona High School and Winona Junior High made a trip to Delta State University Tuesday to record an original song, written by WES music teacher Patti Finley, to submit to the J.F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. As most of you know, WES was nominated for a Kennedy Center Honor for arts in education, and the school must submit a DVD for the judging process.

With community-wide participation, the DVD will include collaboration of WHS art teacher Shirley Hamilton, WES art teacher Connie Dees, WHS music teacher Theresa Graves, WHS band director Nolan Jones, and WJH band director Liz Tullas.

Finley also said the DVD will spotlight teachers from WES integrating the arts into their classroom lessons.

A nationwide winner of the Kennedy Center Honor will be selected in May.

One cannot express enough what an honor it is to be nominated for a Kennedy Center Honor. This is a national award that will spotlight, on the national stage, Winona and the fine academic institutions the city has to offer.

Be proud of your children, the Winona schools, its teachers and district's leadership. A first-class, well-rounded education deserves to be on center stage.
