WINONA - The January meeting of the Winona Business Association was held Monday night at 2 Sisters Café, and members planned for this year's special events.

With nearly 20 business owners and leaders present, WBA president Becky Flowers led a discussion into what activities the organization would organize for 2010.

In the near future, the WBA will offer carriage rides again just in time for Valentine's Day. Set for Saturday, February 13, horse-drawn carriage rides will begin on Front Street and travel through downtown Winona. Six people can ride in a carriage at a time.

"I thought the carriage rides last year were a lot of fun," Flowers said. "People really liked it."

Held the same evening as the Montgomery County Arts Council's Valentine Dinner Show to be held at Timbeaux, many of those taking carriage rides last year attended the event after the ride. Paula McCaulla and Elizabeth Eldridge with MCAC were very complimentary of the carriage rides.

Times and reservation information will be available closer to the date.

Due to its great success last spring, the city-wide yard sale will return this year on May 1. Organizers hope to centralize the location of the event - bringing every yard sale into the Montgomery County Coliseum and the outdoor parking area.

Member Mickey Austin said he felt it was difficult for those visiting Winona for the sale to navigate throughout town looking for individual sales.

"If we could have everything in one place, I think it would be better for people coming into Winona for the sale," Austin said.

The second Saturday in October is now the established date of the Winona Crossroads Festival. Event organizers selected the universal date to allow plans to be made months in advance for the festival.

This year's festival will be held October 9, and festival chairman Becky Flowers is looking for committee volunteers to help with planning.

The Winona Christmas Parade has a universal date as well. WBA members voted to set the Winona Christmas Parade on the first Saturday in December at 6 p.m.

Last year's parade was held in the afternoon, but residents requested the parade return to the evening and lighted floats. WBA members agreed and moved the parade to the evening but left it on Saturday because of the positive response received about additional events held prior to the parade.

The cooking contest, barbecue contest, and food ally will return next year, and parade chairman Kenna Huffman has already been in talks to expand the pre-parade activities and parade participation.

"We need to start booking people now for next year," Huffman said.

The next meeting of the WBA will be held at 2 Sisters on February 8, 2010, and the membership voted to set the monthly meeting on the first Monday of each month at 6 p.m.

At Tuesday’s Mayor and Board of Aldermen meeting Mayor Jerry Flowers informed the board of WBA’s plans, and the board issued their support to the organization.
