WINONA - The Mayor and Board of Aldermen agreed to hire Staten Construction of Grenada to pave three city streets in dire need of resurfacing.

Staten will soon pave Campbell Street, from Highway 51 to Nola Street, Jefferson Street, and Raper Street.

Winona road manager Ricky Thompson told the board that Staten's estimates for the projects were actually less than he determined for the city to pave the streets.

"The price of asphalt right now is ridiculous," Thompson said.

Thompson said he approached Staten Construction recently while they were in Winona paving the road leading to the Holiday Inn Express, currently under construction. He said he just wanted to inquire about how much it would cost for the company to pave the streets while they were in the area.

"I just wanted to see if they could do it while they were already down here," Thompson said.

Costs to pave the streets are $8,500 per street for Jefferson and Raper and $7,122 for Campbell Street.

The board voted unanimously to hire the company for the work.

In other business, the board voted to accept the bid of Red Oak Construction, LLC, to rehab the city's waste water treatment facility. Cost of the project will be $217,156, paid for from grant funds received through the Appalachian Regional Authority (ARA).

Mayor Jerry Flowers said the accepted bid is $72,000 less than original estimates, and he hopes the ARA will allow the city to use a portion of the surplus to resurface the blacktop, required by the Department of Environmental Quality to reduce dust, in front of the facility on Stafford Wells Road.

"It has to be paved, and it will cost the city $10,000 to pave it because it doesn't have a base," Flowers said. "They might say no, but it doesn't hurt to ask."

Winona Park Director Mike Narmour reported to the board that the PeeWee Football banquet will be held next Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at the Winona Community House from 7 until 9 p.m.

He said all players must turn in their football uniforms and equipment before being allowed to attend the banquet.
