Since the 2006 season there was not a single victory in the win column for the Carroll Academy Rebels and that all changed Friday night.
The Rebels defeated the Sharkey Issaquena Academy Confederates 39-6, snapping the longest losing streak in the school's history at 28 games.
"This feels good," senior Andrew Wright said. "I haven't gotten a win since my freshman year and it doesn't get better than this."
Head Coach John Higginbotham agreed with Wright and said the streak is over and the team can move forward.
"Now all we have to do is take it one game at a time," Higginbotham said.
Carroll trailed SIA 6-0 in the second quarter, but scored twice in the final four minutes of the half for a 14-6 lead at the break.
Mason Shelton had a 3-yard touchdown run, followed by a two-point run by quarterback C.J. Hodges.
Hodges had a 36-yard TD strike to Breland Marett with 1:30 left before the half.
Higginbotham said the team has to become a four quarter team and play well throughout each game.
"Just like the Winona game, we played well at the beginning and struggled at the end," Higginbotham said.
The Rebels chalked up nearly 400 yards on the ground with 52 carries.
The Rebels scored three times in the third. Junior Braxton Moore had a 4-yard TD run to start the scoring drive. Moore would later score on a 19-yard run.
Sophomore Tyler Bingham had a 10-yard scoring gallop, and sophomore Hayden Harrell closed out the scoring midway through the fourth with a 9-yard run.
It was the combination of both Moore and Shelton that led the ground attack. Moore led the way with 131 yards and two TDs on 13 carries, and Shelton had 110 yards and a TD on 18 carries.
Hodges completed 5-of-7 passes for 102 yards. Marett had two receptions for 62 yards.
Defensively Ty Gregg and Senior Dustin Raby combined for 23 tackles. Junior Nick Mumme had two interceptions.
This week, the Rebels will host the Immanuel Christian Rams, a team that the Rebels defeated 20-0 in a preseason jamboree.
"The players have really been excited, but practice hasn't changed," Higginbotham said. "I told them we have a chance to go 2-1 this season."
Higginbotham said this year's Rebels are a very good team, and the energy has even crossed into the community.
"Hopefully, we can put more people in the stands and keep it rolling," Higginbotham said.
Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
