Over the last few months, a group of citizens led by retired pastor Johnny Walker is working to construct a 90 foot cross near the interchange of Highway 82 and Interstate 55 in Winona.

This project does not only include the cross but also 10 monuments, each depicting one of the 10 Commandments. Park benches and landscaping will complete the project - giving the area a park-like feel. The project is being privately funded by local individuals.

Currently, the group is working to acquire property to construct the project, but a final site has yet to be selected.

In the American Bible Belt, Christian symbols are often displayed throughout communities, especially on roadways. Crosses affixed to trees, small signs asking about salvation, and even billboards displaying Christian messages are common sights.

The difference with this project is the sheer scale of the cross, 10 Commandments, and park area. Those passing on Interstate 55 and Highway 82 will certainly see it, and it will easily lure drivers to take the Winona exit and get a better look.

In addition, the cross will visualize the wholesomeness of its community and get people reflecting on what Winona has to offer in terms of living, working, and recreation.

I can only see positive effects from such a project. Any draw that can bring visitors into our community to shop, eat, or even relocate is worth looking into. Walker and his group are definitely being proactive about improving our community, and they might be making our souls a little better in the process as well.

It is good to see government entities partnering together to achieve a goal.

Montgomery County is currently working with the City of Winona to pave several streets in the city limits. The city is paying for all materials needed in the project, and the county road department will donate its time, manpower, and equipment to assist the city's road department on the project.

In a small community like Montgomery County, tax dollars need to be maximized to provide the necessary services to its residents. By combining resources with other government entities, more projects can be completed, and tax dollars conserved.

The City of Winona and Montgomery County deserve a pat on the back for their cooperation and ingenuity in getting the job done.
