I attended the Winona Business Association meeting Monday night, and I am thrilled with what the group plans for the remainder of the year.
In August, WBA will host a meet and greet for Dr. Randy Poss, the new superintendent for Winona Separate School District, and Mike Guttuso, the new headmaster at Winona Christian School.
Winona's business community has actively supported both schools financially and otherwise throughout the years, and this will give our business leaders a chance to meet the two educators. There is no better way to cultivate the relationship between the business sector and the area's educators.
WBA is also working to organize the second annual Crossroads Festival on October 3 in Winona.
Last year, a group of individuals led by Gerry Whitfield, organized the first Crossroads Festival, and everyone involved was pleased with the enormous turnout for the event. This year, WBA hopes to make the event even better.
According to WBA organizers, efforts are underway to draw vendors to town and expand activities for children. The evening street dance will also be revived this year.
Most of all, I am excited about WBA's plans for the holiday season. Let's face it - no one does Christmas quite like Winona.
Chaired by Kenna Huffman, this year's Christmas parade will be held on Saturday, December 6, and activities are scheduled all day.
Beginning with Breakfast with Santa, kids will enjoy a delicious breakfast and have the opportunity to meet Santa. Photographs will also be taken.
A chili cook-off and pie bake-off is also being discussed.
The day will be concluded with the annual Christmas parade. This year's theme - "Christmas Around the World."
Scheduled for 2 p.m., the parade will be a little different than last year, but Huffman is excited about the day of activities.
"This will get people into town for the day," Huffman told the WBA membership. "With everything going on, there should be something for everyone."
The WBA continues to work to improve the business climate in Winona. So far this year, the group - made up of business leaders, business owners, and public officials - has organized Valentine's Day carriage rides, a city-wide yard sale, and visitor's packets for park tournaments and other events.
An organized business association can only help promote Winona and all it has to offer, and I have been quite impressed with what has been done so far.
