In the three municipal elections in Carroll County, two incumbents and one newcomer won bids for mayoral seats.
In the town of North Carrollton, Pete Misskelley kept his seat as mayor, as he defeated opponent businesswoman Barbara Grantham. Misskelley edged passed Grantham, in a tight race, by only 19 votes. Misskelley had 84 votes to Grantham's 65.
In the alderman election for the town, veteran alderwoman Diane Slocum was the leader with 119 votes.
"This is a great town," Slocum said. "My interests have always been for North Carrollton."
Incumbents Mitchell Costillow, Rev. Eddie Carpenter, and Tom Hearn were also among the highest of vote-getters. Costillow accumulated 109 votes, Hearn received 96 votes and Carpenter received 91 votes.
With one available seat left for alderman affidavit votes will likely determine who will be elected to the fifth alderman seat.
According to North Carrollton election commissioner Ken Strachan, Jennifer Misskelly - Marrett received 79 votes, Chris Givens received 77 votes and incumbent Charles McCluskey had 72 votes by the nights end.
"Those numbers could change when the affidavit votes are counted," Strachan said.
Strachan said eight affidavit ballots will be counted on Wednesday afternoon.
Carrollton
By sixty votes, Annie Mae Wilson was elected once again as the mayor of Carrollton. The 82-year-old incumbent, Wilson, defeated Tommy Goodman 93 votes to Goodman's 33.
"I feel fine today," Wilson said. "I appreciate everybody voting for me."
In the Carrollton aldermen race, it was Dr. Bernard Taylor that won his first bid on the town's board with a leading 101 votes. The lone incumbent, Russell Wilson, will return to his alderman's seat as he received 99 votes. Other newcomers Gary Bankston was second with 95 along with Houston Sanders and Jerry Stanford, who each had 90 votes.
Allen Lee received 73 votes and Susan Dunn received 63 in their alderman bid.
Vaiden
The process was a slow one for the town of Vaiden, but by midnight a winner was declared.
Businessman Mel Hawthorne was declared the winner and new mayor of Vaiden. Hawthorne will take over after the retirement of current mayor George Turbeville. With 133 votes, Hawthorne defeated Dennis Welch, who brought in 75 votes.
With 36 votes, Wayne Burkett finished third in front of retired police chief Ricky Downs, who received 24 votes and James Stovall's nine.
The new aldermen for Vaiden will be: Doris Fluker, Curtis Meeks, Stella Bell, Lisa Williams, and Grace Voorhees.
In the alderman's race, the incumbent Fluker was the frontrunner in the votes with 223 and Meeks, another incumbent, was second with 215 votes. Bell was third with a total of 213 votes and Williams received 152 votes. Voorhees received 125 votes.
Lemon Cunningham finished three votes shy of a third straight term of alderman. James Cox received 115 votes and Sarah Smith received 85 votes.
