Friday night, I attended the annual Relay for Life event at the Montgomery County Coliseum. Proceeds from the event go to benefit the American Cancer Society.

As usual, community support was extraordinary. As I walked into the coliseum, the red dirt floor was literally covered with guests, and initial counts show that nearly 1.500 people came out to lend their support.

I continue to be impressed with the level of charitable giving in our small community. Whether it be a small benefit for someone in need or a well-orchestrated event like Relay for Life, those in the Crossroads are always willing to lend a hand, make a donation, or participate.

I would like to thank the Relay for Life committee for their hard work and dedication, the numerous teams whose ingenuity raised thousands for cancer research, and the many entertainers and musicians that made the night so special.

The Winona High School Athletic Banquet, sponsored by the Winona High School Booster Club, was held Monday night, and athletes from every grade were honored for their team spirit and success in their sport.

I watched in amazement as athlete after athlete took to stage to receive recognition for a job well done, and I was touched by the maturity and dignity in which these young people, and our community's future leaders, all conducted themselves. That says a lot about the school's coaches and teachers.

It also says a lot about the parents and families of these athletes. I commend the Winona High School Booster Club for their endeavors to provide for the school's athletic program. From working the concession stands at games to improving the schools facilities, the athletic program at Winona High School is enhanced by the commitment of the Booster Club.
