WINONA -- It was not the start that the Winona Lady Tigers wanted, but coaches say the slow pitch softball team will be just fine as the season goes on.

The Lady Tigers started the season at the Kosciusko Kickoff Tournament last week and fell in games against both the Lady Whippets and Leake Central.

“We played well,” coach Steven Helms said. “We hit the ball very good, but we hit it right to the other players.”

The Lady Tigers lost to Kosciusko 4-2 in their season opener. Winona got RBIs from Lexie Flowers and Adrienne Eskridge, and Mary Ashton Thornburg had a run scored. Blake Bond also had a hit in that game.

“We had a few mistakes, but we’re going to get better,” Helms said. “They knew they played well.”

In the second game, the Lady Tigers fell to Leake Central 7-4.

Winona will travel to French Camp today and look to get in the win column. On Saturday, the Lady Tigers travel to 1A Ethel.

The Lady Tigers return home next Thursday when they face Leflore County in their first district game of the season.
