Spann was born on March 29, 1935, to Willie Clinton Robertson and Earnestine Acy Robertson. He passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, surrounded by his family. Spann attended Black Hawk School and graduated from Holmes Agricultural High School in 1953. He attended Holmes Junior College in 1954, where he played basketball. Spann joined the Marines in 1955 and was a member of the 6th Marine Regiment. He served a tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea as part of a peace keeping force. After being honorably discharged in 1958, Spann embarked on a successful career in the cotton business. After 21 years with Staplcotn, he left to open his own company, Spann Robertson Cotton, which remains active today.

Spann enjoyed hunting and fishing and was the Past President of the Leflore County Hunting & Fishing Association. He was the longest serving member of its Board of Directors. He was very active in the Black Hawk Methodist Church and served many years as the Finance Chairman, as well as the Board of Trustees. Spann was also a driving force in the restoration and preservation of the Historic Old Black Hawk School Building and had a leadership role in the Annual Homecoming.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Earnest Carroll Robertson; his sister, Willie Mae Robertson Coward; three brothers in law, James Coward, Houston Mims, and Donald Ford; and his life long best friend, Robert Shute.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Jean Edwards Robertson; four children, Gary Robertson (Donna), Russ Robertson (Mellonie), Angela Adams, and Jeanna Robertson; seven grandchildren, Blake Adams (Kim), Morgan Taylor (Jeffrey), Russell Robertson (Rachel), Willie Robertson, Joshua Robertson, Clay Robertson, and Jake Robertson; one great grandson, Rivers Taylor; and his best friend and duck hunting buddy, Robert Pool and his wife Billie Joyce.

Visitation was held on Friday, August 8, from 5 until 7 pm, at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, August 9, at 2:00 pm at the Black Hawk Methodist Church in Black Hawk. Brother Ricky Reece officiated. Burial will be in Black Hawk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jimmy Chandler, Jerry Galey, Wayne Peacock, Alan Daves, Mathew Streater, Robert Pool, Michael Bussey, and George Saunders. Honorary pallbearers were Sam Gullette, Jimmy Coward, Wilton Sanders, Bob Acree, and Joe Saunders. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Black Hawk Cemetery Association, 703 County Road 235, Coila, MS, 38923.
