WINONA – Two people have been charged in connection with a stabbing and shooting that occurred Sunday night.

According to investigating officer Antreon Moore, officers were dispatched to the corner of Mortimer and Academy Streets where a stabbing had been reported. Moore said they discovered a 15-year-old victim, suffering a stab wound in both arms and two wounds in his abdomen.

“The victim told us that Michael Merritt stabbed him,” Moore said.

According to witnesses on the scene, the stabbing was the result of an alleged altercation inside Jitney Junior. The incident started out as a fist fight, and it was not until the fight was over that the victim realized he had been stabbed.

The victim was transported by ambulance to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Soon after leaving the scene at Academy and Mortimer, Moore said officers were dispatched to the intersection of North Union and Justy Streets to the report of shots being fired. The shooting is still under investigation, but two arrests have been made in the incident.

Moore said the stabbing and the shooting were connected.

Michael Merritt, Jr., 20, of Winona was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault in connection with the stabbing and one count of aggravated assault with a weapon for the subsequent shooting. He is being held at the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility in Vaiden under a $100,000 bond.

Deion Stinson, 20, of Winona was arrested and charged with drive-by shooting and discharging a weapon in the city limits in connection with the shooting. He is being held on a $100,000 bond at Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility.
