WINONA – A man that escaped the custody of the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility while seeking medical treatment at Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital was sentenced to jail time for the escape.

Darrell W. Marshall of Kilmichael was sentenced to 10 days in jail for misdemeanor escape when he walked away from corrections officers at Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital in Winona.

Carroll County Sheriff Jerry Carver said Marshall was being held at the Carroll-Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility on contempt of court charges from the City of Winona. Marshall faced first offense shoplifting charges in Winona as well, according to court documents.

Carver said to escape, Marshall diverted the attention of the corrections officer and got away.

Winona Chief of Police Johnny Hargrove said Marshall turned himself in to Winona police July 29.

In Winona City Court on Tuesday, Marshall pleaded guilty to misdemeanor escape before Judge Donald Bond in Winona City Court and was sentenced to jail.

Marshall also pleaded guilty to first offense shoplifting for stealing a can of beer valued at $1.06 from a Winona convenience store. He was fined $427.25.
