Students start returning to school today

Kids are heading back to school, beginning today.

On Thursday and Friday, students in the Winona School District, Carroll County School District and Carroll Academy returned to the classrooms.

Next week will be the first full week of classes at Winona Christian School and the Montgomery County School District.

Students returned to the classrooms today in the Winona School District, and according to Superintendent Dr. Teresa Jackson, approximately 1,150 kids are expected this year in the district.

At Winona Elementary School, Paul Laurence is the principal, and at Winona Secondary School Charlie Parkerson is the principal.

Classes start in the Carroll County School District on August 7.

Approximately 1,000 students are projected for the upcoming year in Carroll County School District, where Billy Joe Ferguson is superintendent.

At Marshall Elementary, Fletcher Harges will be the new principal, taking over for Laura Curry, who retired. Coretta Green enters her fifth year at George Middle School, and at the J.Z. George High Joey Carpenter remains as principal for a third year.

Ferguson said as classrooms begin to fill, the anticipation and excitement of returning to school is like waiting for Christmas.

“That’s what it reminds me of, a holiday,” Ferguson said. “Everyone, especially students, are excited to return.”

Friday will be the officials start for students at Carroll Academy, who will only spend a half day in the classrooms. The first full day of school for CA students will be Monday, Monday 11. Administrators are expecting about 350 for this school semester.

Monday will also be the return of students at Winona Christian School and those in the Montgomery County School District. Students at WCS will only spend a half day Monday, where approximately 350 are enrolled. The headmaster at WCS is Cameron Wright.

The count in the Montgomery County School District is approximately 300. Michael Hood is superintendent of the Montgomery County School District, and the schools are led by Lewis Ziegler at the high school and Patricia Cox at the elementary school.
