Unemployment numbers up for June in counties

JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Employment Security released June’s employment numbers this week, and both Carroll and Montgomery County’s unemployment claims increased since May.

According to the labor market data, Carroll County’s unemployment rate rose from 7.8 percent to 8.6 percent. Montgomery County showed an increase in unemployment as well – from 9.7 percent in December to 10.9 percent in June.

Of the 82 counties, Carroll ranked 25th in unemployment for June. The total number of those receiving unemployment benefits is 410.

Carroll County’s 8.6 percent unemployment rate is at a five-year low for June, with June 2009 ranking the highest at 11.4 percent in a five-year span.

Montgomery County ranks 58 of the 82 counties with June’s 10.9 percent unemployment rate. Four hundred eighty are currently unemployed.

June 2014 is also a five-year low in unemployment for Montgomery County in comparison to the past five Junes. The highest June for unemployment was June 2009 when the unemployment rate was 14.7 percent.

Of the surrounding counties, Montgomery has the fourth lowest unemployment rate behind Grenada (8.1 percent), Carroll (8.6 percent), and Choctaw (10.1 percent). Holmes County has an unemployment rate of 17.4 percent; Leflore has 12.9 percent; Webster has 12.1 percent; and Attala has 11.1 percent.

Mississippi as a whole is reporting an unemployment rate of 8.7 percent in June, up from 8 percent in May. Compared to the national average of 6.3 percent, Mississippi is two and four-tenths points higher than the country’s average.

The Mississippi county with the lowest unemployment rate is Rankin at 51 percent, followed by Lamar at 6.2 percent. Scott is third with 6.2 percent, followed by Jones and Madison, both at 6.4 percent. Clay County has the state’s highest unemployment at 18.1 percent, followed by Tunica at 17.7 percent and Noxubee at 17.4 percent.
