The auction was held Friday, July 25 at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
The Steele Apparel building is located on Rutherford Drive in Kilmichael and was built in the early 1970s. At one time, the factory manufactured uniforms for national companies like Shoney’s and American Airlines, Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce director Sue Stidham said.
“[Steele Apparel] was the last “cut and sew” business in the county,” Stidham said.
The factory closed in the late 1990s and remained vacant for more than five years prior to the Economic Development District taking over the deed in 2005. Stidham said at the time of the sale, the factory was just a shell of what it used to be after the wiring, heating and cooling system and other fixtures were stolen over the years.
Stidham said the auction originally included the former Multicraft building, located in the Winona Industrial Park. However, at the last moment, the district pulled it from the auction block after inquiries were made about the building from a possible industrial prospect.
