An inmate taken to a local hospital for a checkup escaped from custody and remains on the run.

According to Carroll County Sheriff Jerry Carver, a man he identified as Darrell Marshall escaped from custody of officers with the Carroll-Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility.

Marshall, 33, was arrested on July 1 by the Winona Police Department and charged with contempt of court.

“He was taken to the hospital to be checked out and when they got there he walked out,” Carver said. “It appears he got the guard’s attention diverged.”

According to Carver on Tuesday, Marshall “has not been picked up,” and he was informed that the Winona Police Department has been making efforts to get Marshall back in custody.

Carver said it is possible that Marshall could face additional charges.

“We’ll look into escape charges,” Carver said. “If he’s picked up, we’ll run it by the district attorney to see about additional charges.”

Marshall was also on Tuesday’s court docket facing first offense shoplifting charges, a misdemeanor. The case was continued until Marshall is back in custody.
