The Lady Stars will play host to their annual tournament at the start of the season, with over half a dozen teams coming into town.
According to Leroy Castille, assistant softball coach, the Lady Stars are 18 players deep this season, and he likes their chances.
“Eighteen is a good number,” Castille said. “We have some players that’s going to hit the ball and drive in runs.”
After their first season in Class AA play, the Lady Stars finished the 2013 season with a 20-12 record in the North State.
The Stars lost Mary Kendall Ware, who will play for East Mississippi Community College this year, and will look to three pitchers to fill the void for Ware, who leaves behind an ERA just over one.
Junior Sara Grace Flatt will be in the mix of pitchers, and after a 2013 where she hit .322 and scored 22 runs, will bring a ton of experience. Freshman Anna Cole Ware and sophomore Anna Oliver will also be in the mix of pitchers for the Lady Stars this season.
The Lady Stars’ infield has a ton of experience this season and will rely on their catcher, Caitlyn Castille, for sure-fire offense this season. A year ago, Castille hit .453 and led the district with 31 RBI and had 11 runs scored.
Brooke Farmer will play first base for the Lady Stars, Kayla Dowdy is at second base, and Megan Macko returns for her finals season at shortstop. Taylor Grace Hill is playing third.
“We’ve got really good infield,” Castille said.
The outfield will be a mixture of players will be in the Lady Stars outfield. Castille said Madison Barkley will play leftfield, Flatt will be the center fielder and Oliver will play right.
Castille said players like Olivia Dendy and Haley Evans, both eighth graders, will likely see a lot of playing time at multiple positions.
“We have a lot of young players that’s working hard for us,” Castille said.
The Lady Stars will begin play Saturday in an 8 a.m matchup against Kirk Academy. Teams that will participate in the tournament will be Carroll Academy, Calhoun Academy, Indianola Academy, North Sunflower and Pillow Academy.
