The Winona 3.5 Men's 18 and over Tennis Team captured the United States Tennis Association State Championship last weekend, and Jay Tompkins said it was the third year in a row that the team has played in finals in Jackson. It finally went in their favor.
“There were several teams participating, but we beat teams from Jackson, a team from Ocean Springs and a Brookhaven team,” Tompkins said. “Teams from all over the state participated.”
With the state win, the team will now participate in the Southern Sectionals on July 25 – July 27 in Lexington, S.C., a town near Columbia.
According to Tompkins, they will compete against teams from South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana and Alabama.
“We’ll compete against all the southern states except for Florida,” Tompkins said.
The Winona team is made up of players from Winona and the surrounding areas, such as Grenada and Duck Hill, and Tompkins said throughout the year they competed in several tournaments. Some members of the team have championship experience, Tompkins said.
“In 2009, we won the mixed championship,” Tompkins said. “That year, the whole team was from Winona. This will be the first time for us to compete in the spring sectionals.”
With a win at the Southern Sectionals, the Winona team will have the opportunity to play in the nationals that will be held in Tucson, Ariz. in October.
“We’re very excited about going to the Southern Sectionals,” Tompkins said. “Who knows what can happen.”
