Funeral services for Ralph Self of Vaiden were at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, at Shongalo Presbyterian Church in Vaiden, with burial following in Vaiden Cemetery in Vaiden. Rev. Philip McRae and Bro. Durward Stanton officiated the services.

Visitation was Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. until service time, at the church.

Mr. Self, 72, passed away at his residence on Thursday, May 22. He was born on January 10, 1942, in Vaiden to Brown and Bessie Self. He graduated from Vaiden High School in 1960. He then attended Holmes Junior College and Delta State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science. Mr. Self served Carroll County for many years as Chancery Clerk before his retirement. He was an avid gardener and devoted countless hours serving as a deacon to his church family at Shongalo Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Brown and Bessie Self; and sisters, Earline Shaw and Marine Buford.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 45 years, Gayle Peninger Self; daughter, Leigh Ann Self and husband, Jamie Lee; son, Shannon Self and wife, Jennifer, all of Vaiden; three grandsons, Tyler, Hayden, and Holland; one brother, Larry Self of Carthage; and a sister, Christine Self of Vaiden.

Mr. Self was a well-known and well-loved soul and leaves behind a host of family and friends that he dearly loved. His greatest joy in life that he leaves behind is his loving grandsons. He loved to spend his days surrounded by these boys.

Pallbearers were Ben Ingram, Spence Goss, Honey Ashmore, Harry Sparkman, Sam Abraham, Tim Beeland, Jerry Hoover, Tee Golding and Charles Nash. Honorary pallbearers were elders, deacons, and elders emeritus of Blackmonton and Shongalo Presbyterian Churches.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to Winona Christian School Athletic Foundation, 1014 S. Applegate, Winona, MS 38967.
