VAIDEN -- People in the Town of Vaiden will put their walking and running shoes on Saturday to participate in the annual Run, Walk or Jog for Diabetes Survivors.

The walk will begin at the Vaiden Public Library on Lee Street. According to the town's newsletter, the walk will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at the Vaiden High School Gymnasium on Mulberry Street, one mile away.

The event is sponsored by the Mayor's Health Council and the Vaiden Diabetes Coalition.

At the end of the race, refreshments and trophies will be given at the gymnasium.

Since becoming mayor of Vaiden, Mel Hawthorne, with help from the town's aldermen, has made efforts in educating and implementing programs to become physically active. In 2010, the town joined the statewide "Let's Go Walking Mississippi" campaign in stressing healthy living, and a year later Vaiden nearly won new playground equipment in a contest sponsored by Dr. Pepper.

The "Lets Go Walking Mississippi" campaign is a program installed by Blue Cross Blue Shield Mississippi that promotes health awareness through exercise - namely walking and daily exercising.

Vaiden is also a part of the "Get Healthy, Trim Down Delta" project, the Mississippi State University obesity program that assists four counties (Carroll, Holmes, Leflore, and Sunflower) in organizing on the local level the implementation of changes aimed at the reduction and prevention of obesity in each county. Each of the four counties had different methods, and Carroll County is using walking and physical fitness.

Sonya Stokes-Greenleaf, Vaiden's deputy clerk and diabetes coalition member, will be on hand Saturday, and she said all age groups are invited to participate.

"This is something we've emphasized over the years," Stokes-Greenleaf said. "The town is continuing to reach out and bring health and wellness to its people. Something as simple as walking and jogging is a way to educate the people of Vaiden."
