WINONA -- The Winona Christian Stars needed the perfect weekend to qualify for the playoffs in Class AA ball. It almost happened.

The Stars ended their season at the hands of the Indianola Colonels and finished as the third team in 1-AA behind Bayou and IA.

"This was a tough one," head coach Shannon Self said. "This is an excellent group of seniors, and it was tough for them."

The Stars finish the season at 17-7 and approached the final three games of the season needing to win two games over Clarksdale Lee and the last game of the season against the Colonels.

Behind the pitching of Brooks Lott, the Stars got a 13-3 win over the Lee Colts in a complete game for the senior. Bailey Lott pitched a complete game in the second game at Clarksdale, but the Stars fell 4-2. In the season finale with the Colts, senior Devan Murphy pitched a complete game, an 8-4 victory leaving the playoff picture open against Indianola.

The Stars started Morgan Mills on the mound, and the junior would only give up two hits in the contest. Unfortunately, the playoff season streak ended for the Stars in the 2-0 loss to the Colonels in Sunflower County.

"Baseball is a tough sport," Self said. "I told the players it was nothing to hang their heads about. It was a good year, and we played in an extremely tough conference. This was a conference where you had to bring it every game."

Seniors Bailey and Brooks Lott, Lane Boyette, Devan Murphy, Will Amason, and Devin Roberts played their final game of their Winona Christian careers.
