The Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol is investigating a head on collision that killed two people Friday morning in Montgomery County.

According to Tony Dunn, MHP's public information officer, the accident occurred on Highway 51 between Duck Hill and Winona on U.S. 51.

Two men Dunn identified as Robert Bush, 64, of Winona and James Owenby, 46, of West were both killed in the accident that occurred five miles north of Winona.

According to Dunn, Bush was traveling north in a 2014 Western Star log truck, and Owenby was driving a 1999 Pontiac Sunbird, traveling south.

"Vehicle two [Owenby] traveled into the north bound lane of traffic and collided head on with vehicle one," Dunn said. "Both vehicles after impact ended up off the roadway in a ditch. Both drivers were killed as a result of injuries sustained in the accident."

Dunn said officers at the scene have advised that the Pontiac Sunbird was attempting to pass another vehicle when the accident occurred.

The accident is still under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Along with MHP, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, the Winona Fire Department and MedStat were all responders to the accident.
