Banks told The Conservative Monday that he has discontinued his pursuit of the police chief job after talking with Greenwood mayor Carolyn McAdams Thursday.
"I have decided not to accept an appointment as the Police Chief for the City of Greenwood at this time," Banks said. "There was an issue with some of the council members about me keeping my constable position and being the police chief."
Last week, according to the Greenwood Commonwealth, Greenwood mayor Carolyn McAdams nominated Banks for the vacated chief of police position.
Banks also serves as Carroll County Constable for the Southern District, a position he was elected to in 2011.
Banks had met with the Greenwood City Council about the position and was highly supported by several of the board members.
Banks, 35, who has experience with the Greenwood Police Department, said he told the city council that he would not resign as constable and wanted to continue to serve Carroll County.
"The people of Carroll County elected me to do a job, and I would not quit the job I was elected to," Banks said.
Since 2007, Banks has been with the Carroll County Sheriff's Department, and last fall, he was named criminal and narcotics investigator by Carver.
Banks, a native of Greenwood, is the nephew of Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks and is the son of former Itta Bena Police Chief Danny Banks.
Banks is a graduate of Pillow Academy and started his law enforcement career in 1999 with the Greenwood Police Department.
"I believe I still have a majority of the council's support in appointing me as police chief even if I don't resign as constable, but I do not have the support I would like to have," Banks said.
Banks said even if the constable job was not an issue, he believes there are still a couple of council members that are not fully behind him.
"I expressed to the entire council that I was not job hunting, that I thoroughly enjoyed being the Carroll County Constable and the Investigator for the Carroll County Sheriff's Office," Banks said. "The only way I wanted the police chief's job is if I believed beyond any doubt that I could make a real difference. The only way I could make the difference that needs to be made is with full support of the other city officials. Majority support is good but not what I feel the job needs. It needs full support."
