The Winona Tigers have jumped out to a great start in 2014 and have climbed to the top of the 3A rankings.

In the latest Clarion-Ledger ranking, the Winona Tigers boys basketball team were ranked the number three team in 3A. The Tigers are currently 14-3 on the season and are coming off a weekend tournament win at Montgomery County.

Only Velma Jackson and Cleveland East Side are ranked higher than the Tigers through this week with North Panola at fourth and O'Bannon at the fifth spot.

"It's a joy to watch these guys play," head coach Evinn Beck said. "They're working harder each day to get better."

Last week, after the Montgomery County tournament win, it was a sweep of the season tournaments for the Tigers. In November, the Tigers won the J.Z. George Invitational, and in December they won their annual Billy Wells Invitational.

The Tigers got their 14th win at Eupora Tuesday and pulled out victories over French Camp, East Webster and Montgomery County at the Kilmichael tournament.

On Thursday, the Tigers defeated French Camp 62-47 and knocked off East Webster 75-39. In the deciding game, the Tigers defeated the Hornets 55-48.
