LaTifa Swims and Doug Mumme had stellar seasons at their respective schools this year. Swims, the sophomore runner at Blue Mountain College, and Mumme, the freshman runner at Belhaven, were two of the top runners in their divisions this season.
At the Southern States Athletic Conference Championships, held at Choctaw Trails at Mississippi College in Clinton, Swims managed to finish 12th out of 101 runners. She helped Blue Mountain to a second place finish only trailing Brenau University of Gainesville, Ga.
Swims was considered one of the best runners in the state when she graduated J.Z. George in 2011. Swims, a sophomore at Blue Mountain College, was hampered by injury last season in cross country.
Swims made a significant impact at BMU her freshman year and was named Runner of the Week on multiple occasions.
The 2011 graduate of J.Z. George, Swims was a back to back 2A state champion and lead the Lady Jags to a championship in 2009.
In his first season at Belhaven, Mumme managed to finish 21st out of 93 runners at the conference championships. Mumme helped Belhaven to an 8th place finish and had a personal best run of 27:14.88
Mumme is a 2013 graduate of Carroll Academy where he starred in football, basketball and track and field. Last year, Mumme was a MAIS state finalist in distance events.
