Stars top Rebels in renewed rivalry game

CARROLLTON -- In the renewed rivalry, it was the Winona Christian Stars that topped the Carroll Academy Rebels, winning 38-0.

The Rebels will return to district action this week when they travel to Grenada in hopes of putting a damper on Kirk Academy's homecoming. The Stars return to Winona tomorrow for senior night in their final home game of the season against DeSoto.

Neither team scored in the first period, but the Stars (5-2) scored three touchdowns in the final 5:22 of the second for a 23-0 lead at the half.

The Stars scored one touchdown in the third and one in the fourth.

The Stars got 83 rushing yards from senior quarterback Brooks Lott, who also scored a touchdown. Bailey Lott had 37 rushing yards and 91 receiving yards with a score. Aaron Gatlin, Lane Boyette and Austin Pearson also scored touchdowns.

Defensively, Stuart Dickerson lead the way with 12 tackles, and Devin Roberts finished with nine tackles. Chet Pogue had nine stops, and Wade Watkins finished the game with six tackles and fumble recovery.

The Stars improve their record to 5-2 on the year and will face top 5 Class A Desoto in their season home finale tomorrow.

Carroll, which slips to 2-5 overall, had 111 yards rushing on 40 carries as a team.

For the Rebels, Jake Liddell had 39 yards on nine tries, and Clark Sanders finished with 27 yards on six carries. Jake Streater had 22 yards on eight attempts, and Tristan Tackett had 20 yards on 11 carries.

Sanders had five solos and one assist on defense. Hunter McCorkle had three solos, which included one sack, and one assist. Jordan Bell had five total stops and a fumble recovery.
