Man dies in interstate crash

A Grenada County accident along I-55 claimed the life of a Tennessee man en route to see a New Orleans Saints football game.

According to Tony Dunn, public information officer for the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol's Troop D, a man he identified as Thomas Williams of Oakland, Tennessee, died in a one car accident in the southbound lane last Friday at 1:57 p.m.

According to Dunn, Williams was a passenger in a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Karen Williams of Oakland, Tennessee.

"As she was attempting to pass a vehicle her vehicle traveled to the left colliding with a guard rail," Dunn said. "After impact her vehicle traveled airborne over the guard rail and onto a county road that runs below the interstate."

The vehicle flipped and came to rest on Grenada's Carrollton Road in South Grenada County near the Carroll County line.

Dunn said Karen Williams along with a passenger Kristina Fluckner were both transported to University Medical Center in Jackson by Medstat EMS with possible life threatening injuries.

Thomas Williams was pronounced dead at the scene by Grenada County Coroner Eddie Robinson.

Thomas Williams' son Dan Williams is the starting defensive tackle for the Arizona Cardinals, and the family was en route from Tennessee to New Orleans to the see the NFL game.

The accident is still under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol, according to Dunn.
