WINONA - One man was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident Tuesday after a four-hour search of the woods in the Sawyer Road area.

According to Captain Billy Nix of the Winona Police Department, Briggs Smith, 28, of Madison was charged with no driver's license, no proof of insurance, no seatbelt, and leaving the scene of an accident, all misdemeanor charges.

Nix said at approximately 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, a Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling south on Highway 51 near Sawyer Road when it apparently hydroplaned and veered into the northbound lane, sideways, and was hit in the driver's-side door by a Crown Victoria driven by Deon Hemphill. Hemphill was uninjured in the crash, Nix said.

Nix said according to witnesses, the driver was ejected from the vehicle.

When Nix and Captain Tommy Bibbs arrived at the scene, Nix said the driver had left the scene and run into nearby woods.

"We searched on foot and in the car," Nix said.

Assisted by deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, officers searched for nearly four hours before Smith was found walking on Highway 51, approximately a quarter-mile south of Sawyer Road, and arrested, Nix said.

He was taken to Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital and treated for minor injuries before being transported to Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility in Vaiden.
