Football returns to Carroll, Montgomery

Football teams take the playing field tomorrow night at the start of the 2013 football season.

Four area teams will play home games to start the week. Carroll Academy, J.Z. George, Montgomery County High School and Winona High School all play at home in week one.

The Winona Christian Stars are on the road this week.

For the first time in both the schools' football history, the J.Z. George Jaguars will face off with the Winona Christian Stars Friday night in North Carrollton at Jenkins Field.

The Jaguars, under head coach Joey Tompkins, is coming off a season where they finished 3-8 in MSHAA's 2A ball.

The visiting Stars, finished at 7-6 last year and was a playoff team in 2012. Under six-year head coach Joe Boyette, the Stars are competing in MAIS' AA ball.

Game time is slated for 7 p.m.


The Tiger/Whippet game has become a rivalry dating back several years. Separated only by a 40 minute drive, the match up has been all Tigers since renewing the rivalry in 2009. The Tigers have won the past four contests.

Carroll Academy

The Rebels open the season tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against Cleveland's Bayou Academy.

This is the Rebels' first year under head coach Jimmy McGregor and their first game in Class A ball. The AA Bayou Colts was a playoff team in 2012.

Montgomery County

The Hornets will start their 2013 season under Josh Glasner as the head coach. The Hornets will host the West Lowndes Panthers at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Glasner and the Hornets will attempt to bring life back to the Kilmichael stands and better their one-win 2012 campaign.
