WINONA -- The Winona Christian Stars are off to a 3-0 start on the baseball season, and head coach Shannon Self sees room for improvement with district play around the corner.

Today will mark the Stars' first district showdown, a doubleheader against the Indianola Colonels, beginning at 4 p.m.

Self said the pitching has started off good for the Stars, but he would like to see less errors in the field.

"Pitching has been a surprise for me," Self said. "Those guys are doing a great job and throwing strikes."

The Stars got wins over the Jackson Victors, Carroll and Central Holmes and will see how the district fares tonight.

"We're doing well right now," Self said. "I think there's good things to come."

Tigers start hot

The Winona Tigers got a big game from senior Josh Carpenter and improve to 2-0 on the season.

Carpenter hit 2 two-run homers on Saturday while the Tigers knocked off Eupora 16-5 and got a win over Cleveland 8-4. In the two wins, Carpenter had nine RBIs on the day.

The Tigers will play host to several teams starting today with the start of the second annual Med Stat Invitational Tournament.

Several teams like Water Valley, Eupora, Jackson Provine, Ethel, Kossuth, Starkville and French Camp will travel to Winona in games starting today through Saturday.

Two games will be played Thursday; two games will be played Friday; and the tournament will end with four games played on Saturday.
