According to Winona Police Chief Johnny Hargrove and Captain Tommy Bibbs, Cheryl Burress, 55, was found murdered in her home at 421B Walthall Street in Winona.
According to Bibbs, officers found Burress dead in her bedroom while performing a welfare check of the household. He said it is believed Burress died sometime Friday.
Bibbs did not release the cause of death, but he did say the manner of her death was not by natural causes.
Amanda Grant, who was inside the house when police arrived, was questioned and arrested in connection with Burress’ death. Grant is the girlfriend of Timothy Burress, the victim’s son. Both Grant and Timothy Burress lived in the home with the victim.
Referred to as a person of interest by police, Timothy Burress was not at the residence when police arrived, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. Winona Police Department issued a “be on the lookout” [BOLO] Saturday evening for Burress, who was said to be driving the victim’s 2002 Dodge Durango.
Burress was not in police custody as of mid-morning Monday.
Grant is currently being held without bond at Grenada County Jail.
Hargrove said more information would be released as the investigation progresses.
