After 13 years as head coach for the Tiger football team, Chandler is now the newest head football coach and athletic director at WCS, something he said he’s excited about.
“I’ve already started scheduling games and things that come with the athletic director position,” Chandler said. “As far as football goes, we’re already setting up summer workouts, so we’re right where we need to be.”
Chandler announced his retirement in February and finished his career at Winona High School with nearly 90 wins. Winona native Joey Tompkins was named the new Winona football coach after two seasons at J.Z. George.
In his final days at Winona High, Chandler said he was soaking up everything he’s been through and the new start to a career.
“It’s bittersweet,” he said. “There’s a lot of people here I hate to leave, that were here when I started and some here before I began.”
As athletic director at Winona Christian, Chandler said he has experience while serving as interim under Wayne Gaines and is currently working on a budget.
“It can be a lot of work, but I’m enjoying it,” Chandler said. “I have my office, and the people have been very receptive. People here are very excited.”
Chandler makes his WCS football coaching debut against J.Z. George on August 22.
